Board of Education''. The Commission brought together leading Virginia writers, journalists, lawyers, and politicians who wrote pamphlets and books opposing integration of the public schools, federal civil rights statutes, and recent Supreme Court decisions. The Commission was headed by David J. Mays, a Pulitzer Prize–winning author,〔James R. Sweeney ed., ''Race, Reason, and Massive Resistance The Diary of David J. Mays, 1954–1959'' (2008).〕 and James J. Kilpatrick. The Commission maintained an active publication schedule until 1967.
